Manta Rays Too!

Magical Manta Rays

Whilst manta rays are on the Ningaloo Reef throughout the year, manta ray tours in Exmouth only really become worthwhile from mid-May through to mid-September, when the numbers increase significantly and the mantas become more curious and willing to engage with snorkellers and divers. (Before this, trying to swim with one is a little like trying to catch Usain Bolt… just a little bit faster than we are…;-)

The grace of these “eagles of the sea” as they cruise through the Ningaloo Reef needs to be seen to be appreciated. They often enjoy interacting with snorkellers and divers, circling them, swimming straight at them, doing loops around them, breaching and occasionally launching themselves out of the water. (Given they can be up to 7m (21 feet) in width, this can be a truly spectacular sight.)

The good news is if you are interested in swimming with the manta rays of the Ningaloo Reef, you will get this opportunity on many of our whale shark tours from late May to early September, and on our Whale Swimming tours from 1 August until mid to late October.

Our spotter plane pilot is not just searching for whale sharks, they are also searching for humpback whales and manta rays.

Observers (whale shark watchers and whale watchers) on our tours don’t just watch the manta rays, they get to swim with them for free as part of their tour too!
